What is a community hall?
Community halls are central hubs in our towns and neighbourhood that enable people to meet, host events and create things together. Having a central place to meet and gather and come together as a community has been a facet of how human’s live since we were hunter gatherers.Although the word community hall conjure’s up images of high ceilings, wooden floors and probably a lot of memories from childhood classes and parties, we define community halls more broadly as:
A meeting space venue for 30+ people that is affordable for use by the community.
Some of the halls for hire that we have on SpacetoCo across the Auckland region are more traditional ‘halls’ but others are accessible, larger meeting rooms that are perfect for meetings, sit down events with enough room for people to move. Our spaces range from heritage buildings, owned by Auckland Council, and ran by passionate community groups, churches, community arts spaces, recreational venues and many other types. We are lucky in New Zealand to have a rich heritage of community halls for hire that have been lovingly kept running by local people, who recognise the importance of these neighbourhood facilities and assets.
Community Hall Hire: Why is it important to have accessible meeting venues locally?
As our cities grow increasingly urban and dense, with high density housing becoming more prevalent across Auckland’s new development, it is more important than ever to have local community halls for hire that are accessible to the people who live locally.
A home away from home
Modern life can leave people feeling isolated. Certain demographics of people spend a lot of their time at home, especially young parents and retirees. It’s important for people to feel like they have a safe space nearby where they can meet other people locally for a chat, to be in a different environment and to meet others in a similar situation to them. Often halls for hire have informal community lounges, gardens and play spaces that serve this purpose.
Community events and programming
Local community events like markets, fun days, film screenings or small concerts provide a opportunity for the whole community to come together, enjoy where they live and provide much needed entertainment and distraction for little ones. Programming classes and special interest groups can enable people to learn new skills, meet new people and also offer opportunities for growth and new sources of income. Our communities are filled with people who can teach, dance, draw who need affordable space to set up workshops and courses. These kind of programmes can be a gateway to helping bridge divisions in communities, building language skills and creating lifelong connections and hobbies.
Counselling and Camaraderie
Community halls are also necessary spaces for people to find recovery and counsel. They are vital spaces for group therapy, healing, coaching and counselling. For example many communities need spaces for Alcoholics Anonymous, group cognitive behavioural therapy, counselling groups, illness and disability support groups, meditation and many more ways we come together for support and healing.
Democracy, Body Corporates, Community Consultation
Community halls are required for many practical purposes - getting the community together for larger meetings, Auckland Council or Local Board Consultations and voting. It is vital that these spaces are accessible and local, as upholding everyone’s right to be heard, involved and have a say means we need to make access to these spaces easy, free and suitable for everyone.
